Agia Varvara

Agia Varvara is a village in the Paphos district of Cyprus, located a short distance from the city of Paphos. It is a picturesque rural settlement with a long history, natural landscapes and a peaceful village atmosphere. The village is named after Saint Barbara, its patron saint. In the past, Agia Varvara was also known by the Turkish Cypriot name “Engindere,” meaning “wide plain.”

History

The name of the village comes from Saint Barbara, and two churches in Agia Varvara are dedicated to her. Until 1974, the village had a mixed population of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, which is why the name “Engindere” was also used. Today, Agia Varvara remains a traditional Cypriot village and is part of the rural area of the Paphos region.

Agia Varvara is situated just a few kilometres east of Paphos, making it easy to reach from the city. The surrounding area consists of hills, agricultural fields and natural landscapes typical of the central part of the Paphos district.
