Pomos Dam Overflows After Heavy Rainfall in Paphos District
After the heavy rainfall of recent days, the Pomos Dam in the Paphos district has reached full capacity and begun overflowing.
The dam has a capacity of approximately 890,000 cubic metres. Its overflow comes as positive news following a prolonged dry period that had previously raised serious concerns about water reserves.
According to an engineer from the Department of Water Development, the overflow was expected due to the intense rainfall.
However, the overall water situation in Cyprus remains challenging. According to the latest data, the total dam capacity across the island currently stands at around 14%, which is significantly lower than last year’s levels.
Earlier, on 4 February, authorities warned of possible water supply restrictions in summer 2026. It was noted that during periods of high consumption in the hotter months, temporary water cuts cannot be ruled out if reserves do not increase.
Despite the locally positive development, water conservation remains an important issue.
