Paphos wins double recognition Green Cities Awards 2024

The Municipality of Paphos received double recognition at the Green Cities Awards Cyprus 2024, becoming one of the most awarded cities in the country in the field of sustainable development and environmental responsibility. The awards were granted for two urban projects that highlight the city’s commitment to green infrastructure and sustainable tourism.

Paphos was officially named “Green City of Cyprus” in two different categories. The “Flower Park” project was awarded in the category “Urban Biodiversity”, while the “Kato Paphos Pedestrian Path” received recognition in the category “Sustainable Tourism”. This double distinction reflects the continuous efforts of the municipality to improve the ecological quality of the urban environment and promote sustainable city planning.

According to the official results, the “Flower Park” project achieved a score of 790 out of 1000 points. The project was recognised for its contribution to the enhancement of urban biodiversity and for showcasing the natural beauty of the area. The park has become an important green space for residents and visitors, offering a place for recreation and contact with nature within the city.

The “Kato Paphos Pedestrian Path” project received 796 points out of 1000, one of the highest scores in its category. The award highlighted the role of pedestrian infrastructure in promoting sustainable tourism and improving the natural and recreational environment of the coastal zone. The pedestrian path supports walking tourism, reduces traffic pressure and creates more comfortable public spaces along the seafront.

With these awards, the Municipality of Paphos officially joined the Cyprus Network of Green Cities and Communities, created by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education. Participation in this network confirms the city’s commitment to modern standards of sustainable development and environmentally responsible urban planning.

Municipal authorities stated that the double recognition is the result of a long-term strategy focused on the development and protection of an environmentally responsible urban landscape. Through the expansion of green areas, improvement of public spaces and implementation of sustainable projects, Paphos continues to strengthen its ecological profile.

Special emphasis is placed on creating a high-quality urban environment for both residents and tourists. The development of parks, pedestrian routes and recreational areas contributes to the city’s attractiveness and supports the image of Paphos as a modern and environmentally conscious destination.

The municipality confirmed its intention to continue investing in green infrastructure and innovative environmental solutions. In the coming years, Paphos plans to further expand sustainable projects and reinforce its position as one of the leading cities in Cyprus in the field of environmental development.
